What Is Social Media Marketing?

Social Media Marketing means using social networks, online communities and blogs for marketing, sales, public relations and customer service.

Common social media marketing tools and the one I use most often with my clients include blogs, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook.

Social media marketing works because:

1. Filling a blog with fresh, search-engine-optimized content is an excellent way to convince search engines to rank your website better for your man keywords.

2. Boring, well-optimized blog posts are fine, because they will help with search engine ranking, but if you can create INTERESTING blog posts and tweets, that’s even better because this will make users spread the word about those posts and tweets.

When you use social media correctly, you essentially get free advertising – instead of paying for an ad, you get exposure through user-to-user contact. Your fans and users can promote your brand themselves in their own networks.

3. Social media is different than traditional marketing methods because it is conversational. Social media marketing is not fully controlled by the organization. It allows for user participation and dialogue.

Of course, this means that a badly designed social media marketing campaign can backfire, which is why, unlike traditional marketing, your social media marketing campaign must always respect the users.

Although fairly new, social media marketing and social media are here to stay. Make the most of them for your own business.
